Once I was in darkness. I lived only for myself. As I groped throughout this world, I hated life and everything in it. I was without purpose, without a dream. Sin had taken its deadly hold and done its mean work.
The years came and went. What had I to hope for? What had I to live for? Everything seemed so meaningless and empty.
Then one day a kind stranger spoke to me. His voice was kind. His manner was that of love. I was taken aback no one had ever spoken to me so. I strained my eyes but couldn’t see His face. The darkness hid it. All I could hear was that love filled voice calling to me. “Come follow me.”
Could this be true? Could He really be talking to me? Could He really be calling me to come with Him? Yet the voice speaks again, “I know you. I know what you have done. Come and confess all that you have done and I will forgive.”
I was shocked. He had just offered me pardon? He knew me and yet He wanted me. Was I to believe this?
“I know you are troubled and weary. Come home with me. I will take you in and shelter you. I will make you a part of my family.”
I lost all sense of time. The stranger stood in front of me and offered me a life I could have only dreamed of. I stood there speechless. My mind was racing with His offer. Through the darkness I walked to cover the distance between me and the stranger.
“Sir?” I questioned into the darkness. “Why would you call me? A sinner?”
“Because I love you. I have chosen you. I have redeemed you.”
My heart gave a great leap. Through the darkness of my world, light began to shine. It aluminated every corner. Yet somehow I felt safe. I could see my own sin and shame, but I could also see the strangers eyes. They were filled with love and acceptance.
Slowly, ever so slowly reach out a hand to take His. He takes my hand and leads me to His house.
Never again was I alone. Never again did have to live in darkness. I had a family. I had a purpose. I belonged. I belonged to Him.
