I used to be terrified of the word Evangelism. I may have even known all the right answers, but I hated when people brought it up, because I felt so intimidated. The thought of going up to random people and trying to convince them into the faith, was enough to scare me.
However, God has been showing me how I should share Christ as other people. He has shown me that I don’t have to walk up to strangers and start a conversation. But I should share Christ.
How do I do this? By living at my faith everywhere I go and knowing the reasons why I do what I do.
First, I know the reasons why I do what I do. I have learned that I don’t just be kind to people, I show kindness because God has shown kindness to me. This is the first step.
The second is to live out what I know. In the store, at home, at church, in my friend’s house, Everywhere. My goal is not to go out and evangelize. My goal is to love everyone that I come into contact with. To the clerk in the grocery store, I give a smile and a kind word. I help out an elderly neighbor. This is how I share Jesus.
And as I love others people ask me why I am different. As I share Jesus with others, they wonder and ask questions. Then I am able to tell them the reasons why I do what I do.
Before I know it, many times I end up evangelizing before I know it, but it feels comfortable and natural. Since I know the person (even if it’s only a little) I can be gentle and kind to them and tell them about God in a way that’s meaningful to them.
For me this is great freedom. Instead of having to try to convince others, I get to live my life loving others and wait for God to open their hearts. It’s a great weight off my shoulders. Now I live my whole life sharing Christ through smiles, gifts, words, actions, and through loving acts.
